What are Runes?

Runes are mystical symbols that can be embedded into items found throughout the allods. Each symbol is represented by a precious metal and represents one of the Twelve Great Martyrs. These metal symbols can be removed from items and sold for profit, or a character can embed the rune of their martyr into their equipment, increasing their heartiness and prowess on the battlefield..

The symbols, their associated Martyr, and their composition are as follows:

Xos Phosphorus Stagen Tin Caprey Copper
Ferr Iron Rokoit Chrome Irsen Arsenic
Ulf Sulphur Plam Lead Hyrd Mercury
Uar Gold Lex Silicon Arg Silver

Extracting the Runes

Extracting a rune from a piece of equipment is a delicate procedure that always degrades the quality of the rune, and sometimes, can ruin it. The process requires a tool called the "Rune Removal Pick," which is only available at specialist merchants.

There is a Professional Rune Removal Pick available from the Allods Boutique as well. While it will still degrade the rune, it will only remove one level of quality.

Simple Rune Removal Pick Professional Rune Removal Pick

To use a Rune Removal Pick, right click on the Pick -- transforming the cursor into a cog wheel icon, and left click on the item in which the rune is embedded. The runes are collected in the Items section of the backpack, and runes of the same type and level form stacks. These runes can then be sold to NPC merchants, traded to other players, set up for auction, or attached to other equipment.

Welding Runes

Runes of the same type and level can be welded to create more powerful runes. In order to do this, a character needs three items:

A Rune Welder: A rune welder can be obtained for a modest fee from either of the NPCs mentioned above.
Gold Dust: Gold dust is a valuable but abundant resource. It is available for sale from either of the rune merchants, however is quite dear.
Crystal Chips: Crystal chips are a rare and priceless item, found in powerful monsters or, for the lucky adventurer, sometimes even in treasure chests. Crystal Chips can also be acquired from the Allods Boutique.

Each type of rune has 10 levels of quality. In order to raise the level of a particular rune, first gather two runes of the same type which are one level lower. For example, a level 4 Rune of Caprey would require two level 3 Runes of Caprey.

To weld the runes, right click on the Rune Welder, transforming the cursor into a cog wheel icon, and left click on one of the lower levelled runes. This will bring up a combine window.

This window shows the amount of Gold Dust and Crystal Chips required for the combine, as well as a slider. This slider can be moved left and right in order to allow a character to customise the resource cost of the weld.

If the slider is moved towards the left, the combination will cost more Gold Dust but fewer Crystal Chips.

If the slider is moved towards the right, the combination will cost more Crystal Chips but less Gold Dust.

There are several positions between these extremes for each combination, so it’s best to experiment to ensure the most efficient use of resources when combining runes.

Embedding a Rune

Afterwards, you can customise your equipment by attaching runes to any item with an empty rune slot. To do this, right click on a rune (the cursor will change into a cog wheel to indicate that the rune is ready to attach) then left click on the item to which you wish to attach the rune. The benefits become more apparent as the level of the rune increases.

All runes have the potential to increase a character’s skill in combat or to increase a character’s heartiness. Which characteristic is increased depends on what type of equipment the rune is embedded:

  • Pants:
Additional Defence
  • Shoulder Pieces:
Additional Damage
  • Chestpieces:
Additional Defence
  • Weapons:
Additional Damage
  • Helms:
Additional Defence

Embedding a Rune into a Chest

In addition to embedding runes into equipment, characters can also embed runes into chests that they find in their adventures, or even the chests they acquire from the Allods Boutique. Runes can influence the type of equipment or weapon contained within a chest, so runes are always useful, even after you've kitted out your character!

nice and understandable article, especially for new Allods members
Why so many runes.
It's one typo of rune per main class (warrior, summoner, mage, etc...) ;)
Hi Konstantin,

There are twelve types of runes because there are twelve martyrs. Each character has a patron martyr, and can use the rune of that martyr to enhance his equipment.

Hope this helps!
Great job! :].

The Novograd Times has an extremely in depth one for people that want to learn more: http://novogradtimes.com/guides/runes-reference-guide/
It's stupid to make 12 runes which do not produce any unique abilities
Its not stupid... Its a way to have variety, and yet equality...
This way you have a market for runes... Which wouldn't happpen if there was only one kind...
And it makes a nice flavour to lore, with the existance of a "zodiac" exclusive to the game.
Well, either this and Novograd news is wrong, or the in-game tooltip is wrong...

In-game tooltip for Helm, Chest and Pants says It increases defense (0,333% at lvl 1 btw)
tooltip for shoulders, melee and ranged weapon say they increase damage by the same ammount...
Hi ReaverKane,

I've looked into it and you're absolutely correct. I've adjusted the guide to reflect this, apologies for any confusion!

Thanks again for your input.
lol... i had just cropped the screenshot right now...

I guess it was some misshap with translations? Happens at times, i know...
Anyhow, and sorry for the double post, going back to the original topic, the runes system is pretty good from what i've seen. And seems really well thought, with the only negative part going for the fact that fusing runes can only be achieved through the "boutique", or a extremely big lucky break with curious chests.

What i mean is, the system in itself is very balanced, the fact that there are multiple runes, and that they have the same bonuses is nice, because it gives a touch of lore flavour to your char, adding marketability to runes (if all were the same you wouldn't sell any runes, and rarely would buy them), and at the same time it keeps things balanced and just.

(Since patrons are randomly attributed to a char, it would be really frustrating to have them give different attributes, specially because being different, some runes would adapt better to some chars rather than others, which would "force" people to reroll chars only to get that perfect combination, or something. On the other hand if they were chosen, after some time 90% of the player base would have the same couple of runes, escalating their prices, and making them rather difficult to obtain.

On the bonuses from runes, and rune fusing, it seems really well thought up, since the bonus is never too high, but with higher lvl runes, high enough to make a difference and making it worthwhile having 6 tiered runes in your gear.

On the other hand, making cristal chips a cash shop only item, kinda unbalances the scales towards big spenders. Which is the only negative aspect i find in this system.
